WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS CLINIC FOR MAINE HOOPS AAU PROGRAM
WESTON, Mass.—With its regular season schedule beginning November 15 at Mount Ida College, the Regis College women’s basketball team is continuing to do its share in the community. The Pride worked with the Maine Hoops AAU program where it provided a skills clinic to players of various ages.
Freshman Claire Ramonas (Portland, Maine/Deering High) was a member of the Maine Hoops program before coming to Regis College. The Pride gave a similar clinic to area girls at the Waltham YMCA in October.
Maine Hoops philosophy as written on its website says it believes in, “Creating basketball opportunities for players of all ability levels where sportsmanship and player development are the focus.” The philosophy goes on to say, “…Maine Hoops believes basketball can teach many of life’s lessons on the court, if character and fair play are always part of the process.”
Between 2004-2005 more than 2,000 young men and women participated in Maine Hoops AAU basketball events. Sports Zone, where Maine Hoops is headquartered, holds “specialized” clinics at cost, as well as monthly clinics throughout the year.
Regis College is continuing to prepare for its opening regular season game versus the Mount Ida Mustangs, before its home opener December 4 versus Newbury College at 1:00 p.m.
Head coach Julie Plant is entering her sixth year with the Pride, and led the team to a 20-10 finish in 2009-10. The team’s success included a The Commonwealth Coast Conference championship appearance, and an Eastern College Athletic Conference New England semifinal game versus Plymouth State.
The conference championship and ECAC appearance were the team’s first since the mid-1990s.
