2009-10 SCHEDULE RELEASED, PRIDE READY TO CHASE CHAMPIONSHIP DREAMS
Weston, Mass.-The Regis College women's basketball team recently released its 2009-10 schedule on www.GoRegisPride.com. Regis will play 11 home matches, including its Regis Tournament Dec. 12-13. The Pride will also play host to nearby Brandeis University Dec. 31, a NCAA Division III Elite Eight contender in 2009, and defending conference champ Salve Regina Jan. 12.
Brandeis narrowly defeated the Pride in 2008, winning 64-58.
The Pride return eight players from last season including three-time All-TCCC team winner, and 1,000-point scorer Jessica Page (Quincy, Mass.).
"She has the ability to put up 20 points on any given night," said head coach Julie Plant. Page finished with a game-high 21 points against Brandeis, and 23 points versus Salve Regina.
Regis College marked an 18-8 record in 2007-08, and a 17-9 record in 2008-09. It also notched back-to-back TCCC postseason appearances, a feat that had not been accomplished since the late 1990s.
Regis returns many of its starting and contributing players from the 2008-09 season. Brittany White (Dorchester, Mass.) missed much of last year due to a hand injury, but should be an impact player for Regis.
"Brittany is an extremely strong and athletic player that will dominate at both ends of the floor," Plant said.
Regis is consistently the underdog in many games, but the Pride can issue a big bite to any unsuspecting opponents.
Usually undersized as a team, Regis is a perimeter threat from its starting rotation to its depth on the bench.
Sophomores Stephanie Crawford (Rockland, Mass.), Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.), and Stefanie Wozmak (Auburn, N.H.) issue immeasurable upside and talent.
Crawford, a shifty and lane penetrating point guard will lead the Pride in the backcourt. Luquet and Wozmak are equally talented guards. Luquet, similar to Page, is three-point threat.
Wozmak is a solid ball-handler, confident in driving to the lane, and comfortable shooting from behind the arc.
The experience that will return should help Regis limit the number of close games this season, games that cost the Pride wins last year.
Regis College opens its 2009 season Nov. 15 when it plays host to Mt. Ida College at 2:00 p.m.
