Regis Women’s Track & Field Sweeps 2023 GNAC Major Indoor Awards
WINTHROP, Mass. - On the heels of winning the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Regis College women's track and field team swept the league's major awards as the results of the coaches' voting were announced Friday, March 10.
Graduate student Ashleigh Kelley (Stoneham, Mass.) was named GNAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning four events at the 2023 GNAC Championship. Individually, she won the 800 meter run (2:33.52), the one mile run (5:32.99), and the 3000 meter run (11:20.94), and then she anchored the distance medley relay to victory, clinching the overall team title for the Pride.
Junior Anastazia Copeland (West Hartford, Conn.) received GNAC Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors after winning the weight throw at the 2023 GNAC Championship with a mark of 13.15 meters (43' 1.75") achieved on her first attempt. Both Kelley and Copeland qualified for and competed at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
First-year competitor Grace Micklon (Salem, N.H.) picked up GNAC Women's Indoor Rookie of the Year recognition as she capped her initial collegiate competition season with a school record performance in the high jump. At the 2023 GNAC Championship, she cleared 1.46 meters (4' 9.5") to finish third in the event, earning All-GNAC honors in the process.
The Regis College coaching staff, led by second-year head coach Ben Colello along with second-year assistant coaches Cole Anderson and Riley McMahon, were voted the GNAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Coaching Staff of the Year. Colello, Anderson, and McMahon played a major role in the development of the team as it scored 55.5 more points than the previous year when it finished in third place.
The Pride men's track and field team received the GNAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Team Sportsmanship Award from the league's coaches. In addition, seniors Michael Carroll (Lynn, Mass.) and Tori Bradley (Dracut, Mass.) were selected to represent Regis on the GNAC Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Regis College track and field team will resume practice when the student-athletes return from Spring Break, with the first outdoor competition taking place at the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational Saturday, March 25, starting at 10 a.m.
