WESTON, Mass. - The second annual Regis College women's tennis invitational tournament was held last Saturday, April 14th in absolutely stunning weather. The sun was out and the temperature was in the 70's, for the 32 players from six college teams.
In addition to the Regis team, players from Colby-Sawyer, Eastern Nazarene, Johnson & Wales, Rhode Island College and Worcester State participated in both doubles and singles competition.
The tournament saw a lot of great tennis and while the overall results favored the Colby-Sawyer and Johnson & Wales teams, a number of players from the other colleges also played some fantastic tennis. Regis's MJ Barron marked her final college tennis event with a singles win in the B flight, while freshmen, Vanneyra Chum and Erika Palmer also delivered individual match wins in their respective singles brackets.
This event represented the fourth tennis invitational hosted by the Regis tennis teams.
"Saturday's tournament, last year's women's and the two fall men's tournaments have all been great events," commented Pride head coach John Ciarleglio. "Coaches and players enjoyed the friendly, but serious competition. We increased the number of teams this year versus last and my hope is to have every team come back in 2012 and to add at least one more college to next year's invitational. I was also very happy with the successes of Regis' players on Saturday. We have a very young team made up of primarily freshmen and sophomores. It has been gratifying to watch the progress of our young players this spring. They are looking forward to our second season in the NECC next fall."
