Pride Fall to Monks in GNAC Action
WESTON, Mass. — Regis College women's basketball was defeated by the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 61-38, Tuesday night at Higgins Court. The loss drops the Pride to 11-13 overall and 8-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play heading into their final regular-season game.
Madi Zancan led the Pride with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jillian Perry contributed eight points, five rebounds, and three blocks.
Elisabeth Stapelfeld recorded a game-high 17 points and added five rebounds for the Monks. Madison Lebel dominated the glass with 18 rebounds to go along with five points. Logan Brown and Lily Bean each chipped in nine points to round out the scoring.
How it Happened
The Monks jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but the Pride stayed within striking distance. A layup by Kailyn Smith cut the deficit to one, 9-8, with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter. Saint Joseph's responded with back-to-back layups to reestablish a 15-10 advantage heading into the second period.
The Monks extended their lead early in the second quarter before a Zancan three-point play stopped the run and made it 20-13 with 6:21 to play in the half. Stapelfeld answered with five straight points to push the lead to 12. Zancan brought the Pride back within single digits with just over two minutes remaining, but that would be Regis' final field goal of the half as the Monks carried a 30-17 lead into the break.
Saint Joseph's opened the second half with another run before Perry snapped a six-minute scoring drought with a layup, making it 40-19 with 5:26 left in the third quarter. Zancan followed with another three-point play to chip away at the deficit. However, a perfect trip to the free-throw line by Bean to close the frame gave the Monks a 20-point cushion heading into the final 10 minutes.
A Striggles three-pointer trimmed the lead to 18 in the opening minutes of the fourth, but that was as close as the Pride would get as the Monks secured the 61-38 victory.
