Pride Hold Off Chargers for Back-to-Back Conference Wins
NEW LONDON, N.H. -- The Regis College women's basketball team earned its second straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory with a 76-66 win over Colby-Sawyer College tonight, improving to 11-12 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
Jordyn Striggles led the Pride with 21 points to go along with three assists, while Madi Zancan recorded an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double. Off the bench, Zoey Swanson contributed seven points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
The Chargers placed four players in double figures, led by Tanner Drury's team-high 15 points. Elyza Mitchell added an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Emily Leonard and Taylor Fellows chipped in 14 points apiece in the effort.
How it Happened
Capitalizing on seven Charger turnovers and holding Colby-Sawyer to just two field goals in the opening quarter, the Pride raced out to a 16-4 advantage, with five different players contributing to the early offensive surge.
A perfect trip to the free-throw line from Kailyn Smith extended the Pride's lead to 20-6, their largest of the half, before aLeonard three-pointer shifted the momentum. Behind five points each from Leonard and Fellows, the Chargers responded with a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to 24-22 with 51 seconds remaining in the half. Erika Marinelli briefly halted the run with a bucket, but a deep three from Tanner Drury made it a one-point game, 26-25, heading into the break.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Elyza Mitchell to open the third quarter gave the Chargers their first lead of the game. The Pride answered to tie the contest at 30 before five unanswered points from Jordyn Striggles put Regis back in front by five with 7:31 to play. Shortly after, a Madi Zancan layup pushed the lead back to double digits at 42-32. With under four minutes remaining in the quarter, the Chargers trimmed the deficit to five, but the Pride held them without another field goal the rest of the frame to take a 51-45 advantage into the fourth.
Regis opened the final quarter on a 9-2 run to build a 13-point lead with six minutes to play. Mitchell brought the Chargers back within single digits with just under four minutes remaining, but a Zancan basket followed by a Striggles three-pointer gave Regis the distance they needed to seal the 76-66 GNAC victory for the Pride.
