Women's Basketball Connects on 16 Three-Pointers in Dominant Win Over Fitchburg State
WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's basketball team found its rhythm from long range on Saturday, knocking down 16 three-pointers on its way to a dominant 88–42 victory over Fitchburg State University at Higgins Court. The win moves the Pride to 3–6 on the season.
Regis showcased a balanced scoring effort, placing four players in double figures. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.), Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.), and Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) paced the offense with 14 points each. Striggles and Marinelli connected on four threes apiece, while Zancan collected a team-best seven rebounds in the win.
Kaelynn Tanner finished with nine points to lead the Falcons, while Shanell Smith-Akpan grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and added seven points for Fitchburg State.
How it Happened
Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) sparked the Pride out of the gate, knocking down a three, assisting on the next two from beyond the arc, and adding a pair of early steals to fuel an 11–0 run just two minutes into play. Regis carried that early energy on both ends, using aggressive defensive pressure to hold the Falcons to just 10 points and take a 23–10 lead after one.
Regis continued to pour it on in the second quarter, stringing together another 11-0 run capped by back-to-back triples from Erika Marinelli and Jordyn Striggles to extend the margin to 34–12. A Fitchburg State bucket at the 4:16 mark finally halted the surge, but the Pride weren't done - Striggles and Jojo Ready (Chatham, Mass.) accounted for the final 14 points of the half, sending Regis into the locker room with a commanding 48-14 advantage.
A Zancan layup pushed the lead to 50-29 midway through the third, and although the Falcons posted their highest scoring output of the afternoon during the stanza, the Pride continued to convert on the offensive end. A late layup by Kristina Asmani (Wichita, Kans.) stretched the margin to 72–34 heading into the fourth.
Regis would go on to double up the Falcons in the final frame, 16-8, to secure the convincing 88-42 victory.
