Women's Basketball Defeats Anna Maria,70-55, For First Win of the Season
PAXTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's basketball team earned its first win of the 2025-26 season on the road Wednesday night, defeating the Anna Maria College Amcats, 70-55, to improve to 1-2 on the young season.
Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Pride with 19 points, eight rebounds, and five steals, while Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) added 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting and dished out four assists. Kailyn Smith (Winchester, Mass.) contributed eight points and a team-high six assists in the victory.
The Amcats were paced by Meaghan Doyle, who recorded nine points and six rebounds, while Arianna Gonzalez added five points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals in an all-around performance.
How it Happened
The Pride opened the game with an early 8-0 run, fueled by four points from Zancan, to take a 15-6 lead with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter. The Amcats closed the gap to within four, but Kristina Asmani (Wichita, Kan.) sank two free throws in the final seconds of the stanza to give the Pride a 17-11 advantage after one.
A Marinelli three-pointer followed by a Zancan layup opened up the second and gave the Pride their first double-digit lead of the night at 22-11. Anna Maria cut the deficit to four at the four-minute mark, but over the next 90 seconds, a deep three from Riley Whittier (Marlborough, Mass.) sparked a run that was capped that woudl send the Pride into halftime with a 35-21 lead.
The duo of Smith and Marinelli continued to build on the momentum coming out of the break, combining for nine points in the opening three minutes of the third quarter to push the Pride's lead to 41-23. Jojo Ready (Chatham, Mass.) extended the Pride's advantage to its largest of the night with a three-pointer at the 4:34 mark, putting them ahead by 23. The Amcats managed to slightly chip away at the lead, but Zancan closed out the quarter with a perfect trip to the charity stripe, preserving the 23-point margin at 56-33.
Zancan opened the fourth quarter with six quick points to extend the Pride's lead to 25 with 6:42 remaining. The Amcats answered with a 7-0 run in an attempt to narrow the gap, but the Pride's advantage proved too strong to overcome as they closed out a 70-55 road victory.
