Weston, Mass.—Regis College (4-2) defeated Daniel Webster College (3-1) 77-60 Thursday. In a game with 55 total turnovers and a knotted single digit score for the first 10 minutes of play, Regis College lasted long enough to stave off Daniel Webster from reaching a school record.
Turnovers led to the low scoring 60-minute first half. Daniel Webster would commit 18 turnovers to Regis’ 13 in the first period.
“We were out of sync,” said Alexis Riseman, Regis College assistant women’s basketball coach.
Three Regis College player’s reached double figures against Daniel Webster. Brittany White (Dorchester, Mass.) led all-scorers with 16 points. White was 7-of-11 (.636) from the floor, and .500 from both the free throw line and behind the arc.
Lone senior Jessica Page (Quincy, Mass.) tallied 14 points, going 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Sarah McNult (Hampstead, N.H.) notched the only double-double for Regis with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Nine of her rebounds were defensive. McNult was 75 percent from the floor (3-of-4), and 6-of-12 (.500) from the free throw line.
Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Eagles in 38 minutes. Tonisha Tate (Lynn, Mass.) ended her night early fouling out with 2:25 remaining.
Tate was the Eagles most dominate player in the first half. With Regis up 13-10 in the first half, Tate accounted for 12 of Daniel Webster’s points.
Daniel Webster’s Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.), Tate, and Gervais finished with 14, 16, and 11 points respectively.
Regis was held to 9-of-24 (.375) shooting from the floor in the first period. “We just couldn’t run our offense,” said Riseman. “We kept turning the ball over.”
The two teams were statistically identical through the first period. It would not be until 16:22 remained that Regis would begin to separate itself from the Eagle defense.
Two good free throws by Stephanie Crawford (Rockland, Mass.) put Regis up by 18, giving Regis the largest lead for either team up to that point.
Bosques, who was held to just three points in the first period, wasted little time cutting into the Pride lead.
With a hard dribble to the right, Bosques stepped back behind the three-point line launching her shot into the net, cutting the Regis lead to just 12. Bosques was 3-of-6 (.500) from behind the three-point line.
Little time would expire before Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Cailf.) would answer minutes later with a three of her own.
Cassie Americain (Malden, Mass.) would convert an Eagle turnover into a lay-up, giving Regis a 19-point lead.
“Our defense created turnovers which led to points in transition,” Riseman remarked.
Daniel Webster entered the game with its best record in school history. Regis College will host Suffolk University Dec. 8 at 7 PM. The Eagles will host Fisher Dec. 5 at 1 PM.
