Weston, Mass.—Regis College women’s basketball returns to The Den Tuesday, Nov. 24 after having gone 1-1 in the Keene State College Tournament over the weekend. The Pride lost to the Owls 73-64 Nov. 20. Keene State was an NCAA Division III Top 25 Honorable Mention.
Stephanie Crawford is leading the Pride with 16.3 points per game, and teammate Jessica Page is averaging 15.8 PPG. Crawford posted 26 points in the Pride’s 73-62 consolation game loss to SUNY-Cobleskill.
Three’s Company
Page is notably the Pride’s three-point scoring threat. It is her specialty if you will. In four games Page is shooting 50 percent. In the Pride’s loss to SUNY-Cobleskill Page was an uncharacteristic 0-6 from behind the arc.
Regis has depth in three-point shooters, as the Pride is deep in talent at the guard position. Crawford is not normally a three-point shooter, but is 66 percent (2-for-3) in Regis’ last three contests.
Crawford was the only person to hit a three Saturday. Sophomores Caitlin Luquet, Meagan Tobin, and Stefanie Wozmak are also capable of shooting from behind the line.
Tobin and Luquet have the ability to knock it down, but they have to set their rhythm early.
Multiplicity
Page and Brittany White add an interesting balance to the floor. White is strong, athletic, and capable of driving to the lane or shooting the mid-range jumper.
Page is a shooter that will leave you without any lights in the gym when she is on her game. She too is capable of driving, but is naturally near the three-point line. Either can get you double figures on any given night.
Another complementing pair is Crawford and Wozmak. Crawford as the point guard is the better fit for Regis. Crawford gets to the lane with a shifty crossover and quickstep. However, playing against talented defenders could limit her penetration into the paint.
That is where Wozmak is a fitting addition. Wozmak has a pretty shot, and if given time she could be more consistent than the 43 percent she’s shooting to date.
If these four work off of each other Regis seems to be the likely favorite on paper. Teams that have trouble defending fast and athletic players will struggle with Crawford and White. Forcing additional help on the drive opens Page or Wozmak for the jumper.
Balance Each Half
In its first four games Regis College was outscored 145-120 in the first half. If Regis sets its tone early in the contest and maintains that throughout the first period, opposing teams will have a difficult time staying on pace.
Regis went on a 14-0 run against Mt. Ida before the Mustangs posted its first score. The Pride went practically basket-for-basket against Mitchell, which limited Mitchell’s chances of taking an upper hand.
When Regis plays consistently well in the first half, it can create a larger halftime lead and capitalize on its second half stance.
Against a talented Keene State College team Regis was down by 16 at the half, and closed the gap to within nine in the second half.
The Pride outscore its opponents in the second half 170-123. If Regis stays consistent in its shot selection, having Sarah McNult dominate the rebound stat column, and share the ball offensively, teams will find it tougher to stop a talented program.
Regis will host Rivier College Nov. 24 at 5 PM.
