Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match On Long Island
PATCHOGUE, New York -- The Regis men's volleyball team was on island time this weekend, traveling down to Long Island, New York for a tri-match with the Gryphons of Sarah Lawerence and the Golden Eagles of St.Joseph's College of Long Island. The Pride would go .500 on the day splitting their two matchups. With the results, their record moves to 13-12 on the year.
Adam Bonica would tally 30 kills across his team's seven sets on the day, he would be accompanied by Evan Shank who added 84 total assists.
Regis vs. Sarah Lawrence
Regis and Sarah Lawrence traded the opening points before Regis quickly took control behind strong serving from Evan Shank. After the score sat tight, the Pride exploded on a massive scoring streak as the run stretched the lead to 18-6 and completely shifted momentum. SLC struggled to recover, managing only a few scattered points late. Logan Shattuck added a pair of aces late, and Regis closed out the set comfortably, 25-9.
SLC flipped the script early in the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead capitalizing on Regis errors. The Pride settled in and clawed back behind Shank distributing and kills from Watt, Valdes, and Bonica, eventually tying the set at 5-5 and later taking a small lead. From there, the set turned into a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to pull away. SLC leaned on Jackson Perhaes and Jack Cahill offensively, while Regis continued to spread the attack. Late in the set, SLC edged ahead 24-23, but Regis responded under pressure with consecutive kills from Valdes and Bonica to steal the set, 26-24.
The third set started evenly, with both teams exchanging points and staying within a one- or two-point margin through the early stages. SLC briefly grabbed momentum midway through the set, taking a 15-14 lead. However, Regis responded with another decisive run, sparked by Shank's serving and Bonica's finishing at the net. A series of SLC attack errors combined with key kills from Nangle and Reyes allowed Regis to pull away. After breaking open the set, Regis maintained control and closed it out convincingly, 25-17, completing the sweep.
Regis vs. St. Joseph's College of Long Island
The opening set was tightly contested early, with Regis grabbing a quick lead. A mid-set run fueled by Shaun Mischler's serving and strong offensive play from Declan Kerns and AJ Esposito helped SJCLI build separation, stretching the lead to 15-9. Regis showed flashes behind Jalen Watt and John Nangle, but struggled with consistency and errors at key moments. St. Joseph's maintained steady pressure, closing out the set 25-18.
Regis bounced back in the second set with a much stronger and more controlled performance. After a brief back-and-forth start, Regis took command midway through the set behind efficient distribution from Shank and an attack featuring Bonica, Watt, Valdes, and Nangle. A key run pushed the lead from 9-9 to 15-10. St. Joseph's attempted to respond with contributions from Mischler and Saricola, but Regis continued to side out effectively and limit errors. Regis closed the set convincingly, 25-19, evening the match.
St. Joseph's regained momentum in the third set, capitalizing on Regis errors and riding a strong offensive stretch. After a close start, SJCLI used a decisive run to turn a 10-10 tie into a 14-10 advantage and never fully relinquished control. Regis fought to stay within striking distance, but couldn't overcome the sustained pressure. Late points from Mischler and Esposito sealed the set for St. Joseph's, 25-21.
The fourth set was the most competitive of the match, featuring a dramatic finish. Regis came out strong. However, St. Joseph's responded with a late surge, sparked by Cole Violi's serving and continued production from Mischler and Saricola, to take a 20-17 lead. Regis battled back to tie the set at 24-24, forcing extra points in a tense finish. The teams traded points down the stretch, but St. Joseph's capitalized on late Regis errors and clutch plays to close out the set 28-26, securing the match.
