Men's Basketball Holds Off Plymouth State In Home Opener, 78-67
WESTON, Mass -- The Regis Men's Basketball team opened up it's home campaign tonight, taking on the Panthers of Plymouth State University. The Pride would walk away with the win 78-67 improving their season record to 4-1.
Gehrig Brynda lead the charge for the Pride tonight dropping 20 points and snagging nine rebounds, Jamir Harvey was also key, putting up 12 points and dishing out five assists in the victory.
For the Panthers, Yansel Reyes put up 23 points, while also handing out five assists. He was accompanied by Torran Bosworth who had 19 of his own.
How it Happened
Regis opened the game on a strong note, with Brynda drilling a three on the first possession, then later adding a layup as part of an early burst. The Pride would force multiple turnovers with consistent defensive pressure led by Harvey. Midway through the half, Plymouth State made its first significant push, fueled by Yansel Reyes, who scored eight straight Panther points, including a three and a trip to the line for three makes to give Plymouth State its first lead at 11–9. Regis, however, responded immediately. Layups from Sullivan, Raymond Johnson, and Harvey helped swing momentum back, and the Pride regained control. The game's biggest spark came from Brynda, who caught fire from deep. He nailed three triples in the final minutes of the half, including back-to-back threes that pushed Regis ahead 23–18 and then 26–21. Regis' defensive intensity created multiple transition opportunities, and Rob Elliott capped the half with a clutch jumper at the buzzer to give Regis a three-point lead, 34–31.
The Pride and the Panthers opened the second half trading threes, but Regis quickly seized control and went on a strong run fueled by back-to-back threes from Sullivan and steady interior play by Jeffrey Herbin. Elliott then added two straight layups, pushing the lead to double digits at 52–44. Plymouth State tried to answer with occasional baskets, but Regis consistently responded and maintained a comfortable cushion. Late free throws from Brynda, Sullivan, and Fitzpatrick kept the lead secure, and despite a few late turnovers, Regis never let Plymouth State back within striking distance. The Pride closed out the half winning this one 78-67.
