VIDEO: Men's Hoops Lends Helping Hand To Community
In the midst of a five-day break between games the men?s basketball team has been putting their off-days to good use and serving the community throughout the Greater Boston area.
WESTON, Mass. - In the midst of a five-day break between games and with still a week remaining until the beginning of spring classes, the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team has been putting their off-days to good use and serving the community throughout the Greater Boston area.
On Monday evening, the team visited the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Jamaica Plain as part of the Pride's partnership with the American Cancer Society. The Boston Hope Lodge Center is one of more than 30 of its kind across the United States and run by the American Cancer Society. The Hope Lodge provides cancer patients and their families with a free place to stay when having to travel more than 40 miles to receive their treatments.
Throughout the month of February, Regis men's basketball will be joining teams from around the nation by taking part in the 3-Point Challenge. Fans can pledge an amount for each three pointer made by Regis during the month with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs Cancer.
In addition, on Sunday the team organized a nine-team Special Olympics basketball tournament at Higgins Court. Members of the team officiated, ran the clock and cheered on the athletes as they played for nearly four hours.
The Pride followed up on Monday by visiting children at Mission Grammar School in Roxbury Crossing. Players welcomed the kids to school, ate breakfast with them and helped teachers move around whiteboards.
"It was a tremendous opportunity to help out our dear neighbor," said head coach Nate Hager. "Whether it be the youth in Boston, the athletes in the Special Olympics or the people at the Lodge. Anything we can give back, anything that we can provide is just a great opportunity."
