PRIDE PACES MARINERS TO 76-54 VICTORY
The Regis College men’s basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 76-54 victory over visiting Maine Maritime Academy in the first round of the Regis College Tip-off tournament. The Pride moves to 1-0 overall on the season, while the Mariners move to 0-2 on the season.
WESTON, Mass.- The Regis College men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 76-54 victory over visiting Maine Maritime Academy in the first round of the Regis College Tip-off tournament. The Pride moves to 1-0 overall on the season, while the Mariners move to 0-2 on the season.
The Pride started out the gait with a strong offensive push by sophomore Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) who dropped a deep three to secure the first points of the game. Both squads would go back and forth in the paint with the Mariner's Andy Ball (Hermon, Maine.) driving hard to tie the score at five apiece. Regis would get the ball rolling again late in the first period when sophomore Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.) would go on a 6-0 run to put the Pride up 27-20. The Mariners got one last bucket before half by Shawn Dostie (Bowdoinham, Maine) to make the score 36-24 in favor of the Pride.
The Pride opened up the second half under the sharp shooting of Chambers who continued to play the court well converting on layups and three-point shots. The Pride would go up by as many as 23 when senior Jonathon Josselin (Medford, Mass.) converted on a pass from Evin Matted (Hartford, Conn.) to bring the tally to 66-43. The Mariners answered with a three point shot by Ball to bring the Pride lead back down to 18. Shawn Dostie fed off this offensive spark and hit a jumper to lessen the Pride's lead to 16. This would be the last time the Regis Offense would hit a snag. Osanto Marc (Kissimmee, Fla.) tallied seven points in the final five minutes of play to set the tone and end the game with the final score being 76-54.
The Mariner offense finished the day with a team high of 20 points from Ball and 13 rebounds by Dostie to round out the game.
The Pride's offense finished the day with a team high in points by Chambers who tallied 25 and a solid performance by Osanto Marc who chipped in with 16 points and three assists.
The Crimson and Gold will play in the Tip-off Tournament Championship tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. while the Mariners will take on Medgar Evers in the Tip-off consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
