BOSTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team continued its winning ways in the New England Collegiate Conference, topping Wheelock College 72-42 Tuesday at Winsor Court. After tonight's loss, Wheelock now stands with an overall record of 8-8, and 6-4 in the NECC, while the Pride improve to 11-5 and a perfect 10-0 conference total.
Wheelock was led by senior forward Michelle Woods (Wilmington, Mass.), who tallied 18 points and 8 rebounds. Regis, with 10 different players finding the basket, was led by junior forward Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. Classmate Brandi Bonneau (Derry, N.H.) also chipped in, contributing 13 points.
Sophomore Katie Walsh (East Islip, N.Y.) tied things up, 4-4, with a layup early on in the first quarter, but that would turn out to be the closest the Wildcats would get, as the Pride finished up the period with a 10-0 run for a 14-4 lead heading into the second.
A Bonneau three-pointer twelve seconds into the second quarter kicked off another seven unanswered points, before Gabrielle Haywood (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hit a jumper to cut the lead to 15. Regis continued to shoot hot, depositing 22 points over the final minutes of the half, including 3 threes.
Trailing 47-11 with 16:20 to go, five points from Woods on back-to-back possessions trimmed things down for Wheelock, 47-16. Over the course of the final quarter, the Wildcats outscored Regis, 20-10, but it wouldn't be enough as the Pride came away with the 72-42 victory. The visitors shot an impressive 47.5 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three-point range, while Wheelock held a slight edge in rebounding, 37-36.
Wheelock returns to action on Thursday, January 26 when they travel to Becker College for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Regis plays next on January 26 as well, hosting Mitchell at 6:00 p.m.
