LAS VEGAS - Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) led all scorers with 22 points but it wasn't enough as the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team fell to Cal Lutheran 83-63, Tuesday in the Las Vegas Hoopla at the Centennial Hills Community Center.
Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) added 14 points and five assists for the Pride (4-2) who were done in by an 8-0 second quarter CLU run that helped the Regals open up a 34-21 lead. Regis shot a season-low 39.7% from the field and tied its season low mark of 33 rebounds.
Jessica Salottolo (Orange, Calif.) had 21 points to lead CLU (3-5) who had four players put up double figures in points. Makenna Murray (Newbury Park, Calif.) added 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals off the bench.
Regis trailed early in the first quarter but worked itself back in the game and trailed by just five points at the end of the period. Mikayla Murphy's (Attleboro, Mass.) three pointer shaved the lead to two points before a 6-0 Regal run extended the spread back to 18-10. Sam D'Angelo's (Woburn, Mass.) three pointer and Stone's layup rallied the Pride and finished a competitive first 10 minutes.
CLU grabbed control of the game in the second quarter, allowing just two Regis baskets en route to a 41-24 halftime lead. The Regals scored two early buckets in the third quarter to push the advantage north of 20 points and would lead by as many as 26 points in the game.
The Pride showed signs of life, however, in the fourth quarter when Hawkesworth connected on a three pointer to shave the lead to 64-50 with just under seven minutes to play. Tatiana Dunlap (Lompoc, Calif.) responded with back-to-back buckets for the Regals who regained control and cruised to the win.
Regis retakes the hardwood Wednesday against Montclair State who topped Saint Mary's College (IN) in the opening game of the tournament. Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m. PT (3:00 p.m. ET).
