WESTON, Mass.—Regis College women’s basketball released its 2010-11 schedule on Friday. The Pride finished 20-10 last season, making appearances in the Commonwealth Coast Conference finals and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals respectively.
Regis College kicks off its season at Mount Ida College (Nov. 15) at 6:00 p.m., which is one of its 12 road games this season. It will host 10 contests this year, including its annual Regis College Tournament (Dec. 11-12).
Regis will host John Jay College, St. Lawrence, and Framingham State as part of its tournament. Its games versus John Jay and St. Lawrence will be program first as of the 1996-97 season. Regis is 2-0 against Framingham State since beginning its play in 2008.
Following its initial two road games Regis will enter its first tournament of the year. The Babson College Tip-Off Tournament will put Regis against Babson, the tournament host, and Rivier College.
Regis will open its conference play against Colby-Sawyer College (Jan. 8), followed by Salve Regina University (Jan. 11). The Pride and Colby-Sawyer had a battle for a game last year, as Regis would defeat the Chargers 75-73. Regis was not as lucky against Salver Regina, losing by 12.
A number of games, especially conference match-ups, are “Must see” games. We play Endicott, which we defeated to reach the conference finals in 2009, on February 5. Any contest with the Gulls is destined to be a battle. Another game to watch will be the finals match-up with UNE on Jan. 27. Promotions are already being planned for this rivalry game.
Entering conference play, Regis College will return two top five finishers in rebounds and assists. Co-captain Sarah McNult (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) finished fourth in the conference averaging 9.6 rebounds per game. She had season-high 17 rebounds against Wentworth (Jan. 30).
Junior co-captain Stephanie Crawford (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) finished 2009-10 in the top 10 in assists, averaging 4.0 rebounds/game. Crawford also led the conference with its least turnover to assists ratio. She had just 32 turnovers for the season, eight fewer than the number two spot.
Regis College will look slightly different with the addition of a number of new player’s. However, head coach Julie Plant returns approximately 80 percent of last year’s team. Jessica Page was the only player lost to graduation.
McNult is a senior, with juniors Crawford, Stefanie Wozmak (Auburn, N.H.), Meagan Tobin (Quincy, Mass./Quincy), and upperclassmen Brittany White (Dorchester, Mass./New Mission) returning to the floor as well.
Crawford, McNult, and White were all named this year’s preseason captains. Women’s basketball officially takes the floor on Oct. 15.
