Weston, Mass.-Laura Sears (Billerica, Mass.) scored her 1,000th career point in a 74-43 Regis College victory over The Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Anna Maria College Saturday.
On a swift crossover dribble from right-to-left as Sears is quite often known to do against defenders, an AMCAT player would foul Sears on her way to the hoop.
Sears said of scoring her 1,000th point, "It's a great individual accomplishment, but I couldn't have done it without the support from my teammates."
As the whistle blew and the referee signaled Sears to the free throw line, the crowd went crazy knowing that Sears 1,000th point would be soon to come.
Needing just 14 points at the start of the game, Sears found herself needing only one. A 73 percent free throw shooter, she stepped to the line, released the ball, and the crowd went wild.
With the made first attempt Sears said, "It was good because I knew if I'd made it I would have scored exactly 1,000 points."
"It is also important to me to join that 1,000 point club with two teammates that I have played with for the last three years, Kimberly Mariotti and Jessica Page," said Sears.
Sears will lead the Pride in its second consecutive TCCC postseason match-up when Regis College plays Endicott College in the quarterfinals. Regis fell to the Gulls 78-72 earlier in the season.
"In order to beat Endicott we need to play intense defense, take away their three point threat, and rebound," said Sears.
Endicott shot better than 50 percent from the three-point line, and posted 31 total rebounds, 26 of those were defensive rebounds.
The Pride play Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 pm at Endicott College.
