CAT SCRATCH FEVER WEEKLY SPORTS UPDATE

WESTON, Mass.—A new year with new teammates always makes for an interesting collaboration of natural talent, and athletic ability. This year is no exception to that; with a number of new student-athletes to all of the fall programs there is one thing that will remain consistent, the pursuit of The Commonwealth Coast Conference championship.

Fierce by Nature, not Nurture

Men’s soccer is without a doubt one of the most improved teams of the fall sports offerings.

Third-year head coach Jonathan Keefe, and assistant coach Evan Myers have brought in some of the New England’s best players this year. Recruiting is the name of the game. In athletics you play to win now, and that is a possibility that Keefe’s 19 student-athletes are capable of in 2010.

Of course we’ll mention the loss of 2009’s most talented keeper in Andrew LaMacchia, but with loss surely comes gain. Regis College lost a player with exceptional talent, but gained two highly skilled goalies that will make an immediate impact for the Pride team. Ryne Tillman (Bedford, Mass.) is as athletic as they come.

Keefe feels that both keepers are worthy of playing time, and notes Tillman’s physical stature, maturity, and good hands will be an asset.

Stefan Todorvic (Valley Village, Calif.) might be from the state of sunrays, beautiful beaches, and gorgeous weather, but do not let that sway your thoughts on this incoming athlete.

The west coast is now for doing things a little different, and Todorvic will surely present that fact on the field this year. He and Tillman are in a competitive battle for playing time, and the honor to defend Regis’ net every game this season.

Equally as important as the keeper are this year’s incoming forwards, midfielders, and defenders. Sean O’Brien, Nicholas Tavarez, William “Billy” Sedewitz, Jeffrie Parrish, and Adam Heathman will all compete for playing time, and possibly starting roles on this year’s team. Jerry Alcius makes a return to the team this year, and will look to battle with Ibriham Alpha, and Angel Aguilar to lead Regis to the postseason.

Men’s soccer will open its 2010 regular season against Rivier (Sept. 3), a team that Regis defeated in 2009.

New Faces, Same Winning Expectation

Head coach Lisa LeVierge will enter her second year in control of the field hockey program. With three proven returning players to the roster, field hockey has not changed its primary focus of winning games this season.

Meghan “Robo” Robhm, Torie Pappas, and Molly Texeira are each sound, and proven athletes. Also joining the list of returnees will be Cindy Haviet, a speedy midfielder that will lend playing experience to a team of new faces.

Rarely are incoming athletes seen as potential program changers, but the number of student-athletes (10) coming into this class will surely hope to redefine success, and rebuild field hockey to a program of conference prominence.

The team opened its 2010 preseason Sunday, but its first practice will not be held until Monday afternoon. Expect nothing less than these ladies being put to the test as LeVierge will surely break down what is not to her liking, and ingrain the thought of winning into their very core.

Field hockey opens its chase for the postseason with a non-conference match against Elms (Sept. 8).
